Summertime Painting

We haven't done a Drink + Draw event in several months, and with the weather finally having some consistency decided to fix that. It's always a blast to chill outside and draw, let alone with some swell, talented folks.

I've been playing with watercolors more and more the past few weeks, mostly thanks to Joe hosting weekly lunch painting sessions. It's been an uphill battle getting the hang of the medium, but I've slowly come to embarrass the happy accidents that arise. Plus, I've fallen completely in love with these water container brushes which really lend themselves to painting mobility.

(For curious minds, this is the set that I've been using which comes with said brush, and would highly recommend it: Kuretake 14 cake set.)

Yes, Capes!

Saw Wonder Woman again tonight with the fam, and man oh man girl can wear a cape! Also, I loved this movie even more this go round, flaws and all. 💛

Hero of Love

Goodness, did this film deliver! It was as close to perfect as any movie with impossible expectations has any right to be. Sure I have qualms, but I'm just so darn happy it exists.

What I would give to have had this movie to cherish as a 7 or 8 year old. I'm so incredibly happy girls (and boys) today have this film to love and watch again and again. The gold standard for super heroines when I was growing up was Batgirl -- and Poison Ivy, if you want to grow this small circle to include the few villainess in existence as well -- in Batman and Robin. And we all know how great of a movie that was.

Anywho. Back to Wonder Woman, because seriously: that No Man's Land scene...!! I've not stopped thinking about it since I left that theater. I'm totally not above admitting the waterworks were legit that entire sequence.

2014 Very Merry Art Trade

For this year's VMAT, I wound up going the traditional route. No regrets, it was a total blast putting away the stylus and opting for physical pen and paper. (To be honest, it was mostly due to having just gotten a gold sharpie and wanting to use it on EVERYTHING.) 

So here's Batgirl for the talented Tim Beard, done in ink and sharpie:

Ivy's Baby

DC is in the news lately for not letting Batwoman get married to officer Maggie Sawyer. It's not hard to recognize that flat out stinks. 

What else stinks is that in the Nolan trilogy, not once did Batwoman, Poison Ivy, or Harley Quinn make an appearance. I get they "didn't fit into his [realistic] world," but that fact makes me sad nonetheless. Batman is one of the few hero franchises with multiple recognizable female characters - both heroines and villains - and yet we managed to see only one in the three films. (Rachel Dawes doesn't count. She was pretty rad, but she ultimately dies for "the greater good." Uhg.)

As many people have said: we're getting an Ant Man* movie, plus a movie about an armed raccoon (both are Marvel, I know, but bear with me). Yet we can't have a Wonder Woman movie? It's "too complicated"? 

Not cool, universe. 

*I could care less... that is until Simon Pegg was mentioned to star in the eponymous role. Then I was SUPER excited, you have no idea. But with his name being retracted from the role, I regain my "mehh" stance on this movie.

New Tablet!

First drawing done on my new tablet!

I recently bought an Intuos5 after my five year old Bamboo Fun stylus took a dive off my desk and broke. I needed a tablet pronto for a deadline the following morning, and after calling three Best Buys in the area finally found a tablet in stock. The only model they had was a small, and with the clock ticking I begrudgingly said I'd be there within the hour to pick it up.

And I love it.

After weeks of debating if I wanted a medium or a large, I found myself forced to buy a small. And I must say I am so glad!

It's the perfect size for my desk (which is pretty small to begin with), and even with my 27" screen I've had no problems with the size being inadequate. The touch pad aspect takes a bit of getting used to, though I doubt that will play a big factor in my use anyway. I'm still getting used to the new sensitivity, which can be frustrating at times, but also exciting.

The point is: if you're contemplating buying a tablet, the Intuos5 is awesome. And don't get caught up on small, medium, large, etc. The small one is superb, and doesn't break the bank too much.

I suppose there's something ironic about drawing Wonder Woman on Valentine's Day, but I'll leave it open for interpretation.

Anywho. I kind of dig her "new" outfit, released back in 2010. It's so much more battle appropriate than the iconic costume we're all used to, let's be honest.
