Then and Now

I'm a sucker for these type of comparisons, and not having done one in a while I thought what the heck! I find it so inspiring to see the growth others go through, and it reiterates the value of hard work.

On the left is an Inktober drawing from 2014, while the right is a commission from the beginning of this year.

For whatever reason it's a widespread belief that artists are "born with talent," never mind the hours upon hours of blood, sweat, and tears behind the scenes. Just the same, it's all too easy to see awesome art and feel discouraged. But like the proverbial bike, you just have to keep at it. And have fun!

More Color Studies

Two more color studies, this time for Peter Pan and Lady and the Tramp. Both in the 20-30 minute range - I tried limiting myself more after spending nearly an hour the other day on the Alice study.

I adore the Pan shot - everything about it screams Mary Blair, from the shapes to the unique colors.

Also worth noting: while browsing LatT screen caps, I learned La Bella Notte ends with a shot of undies. Well played, Disney.

Resuming Disney Color Studies

I'm trying to get back into the groove of these color studies, as I haven't done one in months. I cheated and went longer than the 30 minute timer; it was closer to 50 minutes on this.

Alice In Wonderland has some stunning backgrounds… and then many shots with literally a color as the background. It's actually pretty well balanced: gorgeous shots followed by "nothingness." You can really tell creative muscles were used to create the zany world of Wonderland within a reasonable budget.

I especially love the sequences where Alice grows and shrinks. Those scenes are interwoven throughout the movie, and the above frame is from before she grows to the size of a house. Namely, the White Rabbit's house. (How adorable is it he has bunny ears on everything? Or a framed picture of carrots? D'awhhh.)

Big Hero 6, finally!

Big Hero 6 is finally out! Saw a late night showing of it last night. Vague verdict: it was awesome. Plus the short preceding it, Feast, was so cute and heartfelt. And that render style! So, so pretty.

Above is Hiro, drawn for a mini collab on Twitter. After seeing the movie, I realize how off model I was. I mean, really: how adorable did he look in the slightly oversized mech outfit he made for himself? SO ADORABLE.

Basically, if you want to see a movie that will pluck at your heartstrings… this is it.

Hiro and Baymax

The Japanese trailer for Big Hero 6 was available as of yesterday, and after watching it I couldn't help draw these two. It has a lot more emotional resonance than the US version - and I say that despite me having no idea what any of the dialogue was, the visuals are that great.

That said, it's also spoiler-y I suppose, as a heads up.

The US version can be found here. It tends to lay on the comedy more, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't laugh at "We jumped out a window!" or "Hairy baby!"

Honey Lemon

Welp. I've officially been bitten by the BH6 bug. Hurry on up, November.

Disney Color Studies Part 2

Here are a few more Disney color studies, all in the 30-40 minute range. These are a lot of fun, but also challenging. If you ever want to feel intimidated look at the lush nature backgrounds in Bambi, or the sharp design aesthetic of Cinderella.

From top to bottom: Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi, Cinderella, The Three Caballeros.

Disney Color Studies Part I

Here are some color studies I did from Snow White and Pinocchio, 30 and 40 minutes respectively. It's a lot of fun - and a lot of pressure - trying to get everything down in such a narrow span of time.

I'm planning to do one or two of these per day as warm ups, so we'll see how long it takes until I get to Frozen… and how much has changed from now.

BAMFs

I just got back from vacation, and in an attempt to get back into the rhythm of drawing, here are some doodles. Korra, Rapunzel, and Hiei from Legend of Korra, Tangled, and Yu Yu Hakusho respectively.

Basil

For today's Sherlock Holmes theme at @Sketch_Dailies.

For the record I totally had a crush on him when I was a kid. Never mind the whole him being a mouse thing.

SkADaMo Day 7

Some color studies from Disney's Peter Pan. Poor London is all dark and gloomy as opposed to Neverland. Oh, wait. It's dark and gloomy opposed to anything, I guess.

All three were in the 30-45 minute range. Technically they aren't sketches, but hey. I'm counting them for SkADaMo.

Aurora

A birthday gift for my sister, featuring her favorite Disney princess!

(I have a thing for oval canvases as of late, as if it wasn't already obvious.)

Day Two

I know Brave seems to get a lot of flack for "ruining Pixar" (uhg), but I really loved Merida's character. Mrs. Chapman did a lovely job for breaking the Disney princess mold.

Blondie

Today was a bit of an errand day, and tomorrow will be more or less the same. So I drew Rapunzel to unwind a bit.

(She's kind of taken over my desk, in all honesty.)

Day Thirteen

Adapting the words of Lesley Gore: it's my birthday and I'll draw my favorite Disney Princess if I want to!  ;)

Birthday Blondie

I've been rather bad at posting every day... I'm drawing like a fiend for portfolio class, it's just a matter of scanning, really. (Excuses, excuses, I know.)

Today was a lot of fun: we went out to Cheesecake Factory for my birthday dinner, and watched Despicable Me afterwards. I'm so blessed with such a wonderful family, and great friends, I can't even put to words how grateful I am for all of them. ♥

The Lucky Rabbit

Wow; hard to believe it's been nearly a month since Christmas!

I received Epic Mickey for the holiday. It's a fantastic game- interesting twists, gorgeous animation, and the whole premise is brilliant- brilliant enough to take up three whole days of my break! I love the storyline, and how Oswald came into his own as a character. Such fun.

The winter quarter started two weeks ago. (I'm telling you, time flies!) I'm enrolled in Intermediate 3D Animation, as well as Portfolio Prep. There's a lot of potential in both classes, and I'm super excited for the coming weeks. Here's to a great quarter!

Tangled

This is a painting I did in between being sick this past weekend. Took about 3 hours total. Painting in Photoshop is the bane of my existence.

I have to say: I cannot wait to see this movie! November 24th, despite being on vacation, I will definitely be in a theater waiting eagerly for it to start.
