CTNx 2013

I had the most wonderful time this past weekend attending CTNx. It was such a surreal experience, meeting so many talented artists I've admired for so long, and finally being able to put a face to so many awesome people I've conversed with on Twitter!

I was just blown away by the kindness of every single person I met, and how it seemed like I'd known some people for eons rather than hours. It was also mindblowing seeing Chris Sanders casually walking in the parking lot, or Eric Goldberg and Andreas Deja getting eggs in the buffet line. That never got old.

I apologize in advance for the Instagram abuse in this post:

I got all checked in on Thursday evening - it's hard to believe it was a week ago already! The Marriott was really nice, and I lucked out having a room super close to all the action.

Chris was so nice! My friend Lauren and I talked to him for a solid 15/20 minutes, and he brought up working on Mulan, his plans for Kiskaloo, how he planned for The Croods, etc. I was on cloud nine the entire rest of the evening after speaking with him.

I spent waaaaaaaaay too much money, but I have no regrets because everyone was just so kind and talented. Most of the books I knew I was going to purchase beforehand, so I came prepared. I completed my Chris Sanders sketchbook collection ($10 each, what a steal), and also bought Rough Draft from EA, a sketchbook and book from Brian Kesinger, Claire Hummel's newest artbook, as well as prints by Natalie Hall and Brittney Lee.

Saturday morning I had a Disney portfolio review, but before that I was able to stop by Stephen Silver's booth before he was mobbed the entire day. I also got a caricature done by the lovely Lindsey Olivares, SPAM sketchbook from Helen Chen, and prints from Rachel Wolfe and Claire Almon. The waterbottle was a surprise gift from the folks at Laika. Needless to say, I love it!

Saturday evening I attended Dave Pimentel's figure drawing session. I've only ever done nude figure drawing sessions before, so having such eccentric costumes with fabulous poses was a dream come true.

Advice of the night: draw, draw, draw. Also: draw fast. I thought our arms would fall off by 9pm! But I learned so much, and also learned how to draw in public without being a creeper. Always a plus.

Sunday morning I attended a panel on color, and Lorelay Bove was one of the speakers. She stuck around afterwards, and was super nice. She had shown a lot of personal paintings as well as work for Wreck-It Ralph, so I definitely left feeling inspired.

Did I mention I spent way too much money? Another print by Brittney Lee, a mermaid from Jake Parker, and Cory Loftis' book.

Sunday night was the secret Disney screening, which to my delight turned out to be Frozen. I had spoiled myself by thumbing through the Little Golden Book, but the book doesn't even compare. The film is just fantastic. I've had the songs stuck in my head ever since, and am eager to take the family to see it next week! I really hope people can put aside their reservations and go see it - the story was so refreshing, and I definitely think WDAS has another hit on their hands.

Among all the purchases and panels, I also got to speak with Claire Hummel, Pascal Campion, Reel FX, and Disney about my portfolio. Lots of awesome advice - even if some did leave me slightly devastated - and so the gears are turning as to new projects I can take on to better myself based on their input.

I was so sad to head home - not only because it was around 70 degrees each day in Burbank, but because it was so wonderful meeting everyone, being in an environment built upon such talent and love for animation. I'm already planning my trip for next year!

SkADaMo Day 1

November is a lot of things, including NaNoWriMo and something to do with mustaches (I try not to ask). But now November also has the honor of being SkADaMo, aka Sketch-A-Day-Month.

These kinds of things are so fun and I love the camaraderie it brings about with other artists. I sadly fizzled a bit with Inktober, but I stumbled upon so many talented artists and learned a lot looking at their approaches to inked drawings.

And honestly, sketching is something I don't do enough of, so I really would like to use this month as a means of fleshing out ideas and having fun. Here's to lots more sketching!

(What do you know, another mermaid.)

In other news, my business cards came in today! I was totally surprised when UPS showed up as I just placed the order late Sunday night. Talk about fast. I used GotPrint this time, as opposed to Moo. While I loved the latter, the price tag was a bit steep. And for $30 with shipping, I got 250 cards with matte finish and rounded corners from GotPrint. Hurray for savings.

I'm very excited to have these for CTN. Let me know what you think!

Belated Inktober

This is actually from earlier in the month, but I only now realize I haven't posted it. I haven't been keeping up with Inktober as religiously as other awesome artists I follow, but I've definitely had fun/learned a lot with the few I have completed. Here's to squeezing in more Inktober time, though.

In my free time I'm working on some illustrations for my new business cards. Since I got a new website my old cards are now obsolete. It's fun - albeit frustrating - designing new cards, that's for sure!

I'm also slowly getting things together for CTN next month. It's my first time attending and I'm super, super excited. The thought of meeting so many talented artists, attending workshops, sitting in on panels, and buying some fabulous prints/art books is just so thrilling. I cannot wait, it's sure to be a blast.

Portal Inktober

I know this has been done a million times, but OH WELL.

This was a doodle I did as part of Inktober, and wound up adding gouache before scanning it in and coloring it. I really wasn't planning on taking it that far, but man do I love Chell/Portal/Valve/etc. So, no regrets.

Inktober Fever

Everyone on Twitter and Instagram has been doing this Inktober event, and I admit I caved to all the peer pressure!

I don't know if I'll post every day of the month - February's Daily Draw takes it's toll in posting day in and day out, let alone a finished inked drawing - but I'll definitely pop in a few more before the month is over!

Blondie

Today was a bit of an errand day, and tomorrow will be more or less the same. So I drew Rapunzel to unwind a bit.

(She's kind of taken over my desk, in all honesty.)

Instagram

Wow, my 200th post! And what a post it is.

Things have been rather chaotic and stressful with work as of late - doing both freelance and retail takes a lot out of you - but this past week has been insanely awesome: last Saturday, I saw Stephen Merchant's Hello Ladies tour here in Chicago, and was lucky enough to meet him after the show ended; today was my graduation ceremony; and this coming Friday/Saturday I'm attending a Pixar story/animation seminar. It's all so exciting!

I'm still pinching myself that I was able to see and meet Stephen. He was extremely funny, extremely tall, and extremely kind. His stand up is side-splitting-funny, and I encourage everyone - of the appropriate age - to check it out.

(I totally nerded out and had him sign my Portal game. Favorite possession? Perhaps.)

The ceremony today was also really fun, and I loved seeing everyone again! I've made some great friends while in school, and I wish them all the best of luck moving forward.

Vacation

2012 has started out really fun! We had a family vacation to Orlando, and went to the four Disney parks. It was crowded when we first got down there due to the Disney marathon last weekend, but afterwards it emptied out nicely and the wait times were bearable. I did lose my sunglasses on Space Mountain - which was a bummer - but the trip overall was a blast.

I received an iPhone for Christmas/graduation, and ever since I've been obsessed with Instagram! As such, here are a few random photos from my trip:

Now to buckle down and get to work!
